From my experience, I thought these ぎりチョコ、ほんめいチョコ、ともチョコ and White day were pretty interesting. Every year I baked cookies or chocolates for my friends which included male friends.
It was a good opportunity to show friendship. Some of my friends did not like cooking and they hesitated to give handmade sweets so they just bought chocolate and gave them to friends or boyfriends.
I like Valentine's Day in Japan because it is so interesting! Lots of my male friends expect to get ほんめいチョコ from their favorite girl. (On this day, girls ask boys to go out so boys expect a lot of things from when they wake up!! It is pretty funny to see their nervous expressions..Lol"
On White day, my male friends usually give girls candies or cookies. If they are dating, girls expect to get a gift that is a little bit more expensive such as a watch, purse,or jewelry.
Even though these events are made up for business purpose, I enjoy them so much! In Japan my friends and I have always said: "It is not fair that girls have ask boys out! They should ask the girls!"
But I heard it is not like that in the States. Still, it is really good to give something form boys to girls=) I am sure Japanese girls would be very happy if Valentine's Day would flip over someday!
I think it is very interesting that the girls ask the boys out and that it happens a lot on Valentine's Day. I wish more girls asked guys out in America!
返信削除You make a good point. Even if the events are business or shopping oriented, as long as people enjoy it and the occasion brings people happiness, then it's a good thing.
It seems a little unfair that guys are expected to get their girlfriend a more expensive gift :P

返信削除I agree holidays are always fun. Even Valentines, it is fun to give or get candy. As I said in my blog, our entire class would give Valentine’s cards and/ or candy to our whole class especially in elementary school. We would make Valentine’s boxes as a class project. I would feel maybe awkward to give candy or something to the person I liked, especially if I were in elementary school as a girl. To me, it is fair to get and receive something from everyone and that way, it does not make you nervous giving to a specific boy.

返信削除Japan seems to be more equal minded in Valentines day. Their are too many times that a relationship is one sided in the US.
返信削除It's cool that Valentine's Day is a day for the men in Japan to be nervous. Then the women can look forward to getting presents on white day. On the other hand, women have to remember to give GIRI CHOKO to a lot of people- they could probably offend someone by forgetting them. And the men probably have to keep a list so they don't forget anyone... That would not go over well with the ladies! O.o
返信削除So, ほんめいチョコ can be store-bought as well? As a girl who isn't very good at cooking, I was actually wondering what someone like me would do for that. Haha! That's definitely something to keep in mind if I ever go to Japan during Valentine's Day.
返信削除I actually really like the idea that it's the girls asking the boys out. Here it's usually the other way around and it's considered kind of strange and even a bit bad if the girl is the one who initiates a relationship. So, I like the Japanese way better. :D

That's not fair that boys only get ほんめいチョコ and girls get watches and jewelry on White Day! If I lived in Japan, I'd want to be a girl for sure.

I gave a Valentine's card to my husband and he gave me a Valentine's card. We went out to lunch on Valentine's Day. We also had a special meal the previous day of Valentine's Day at home.
